Some children will typically slide back a month or two in their reading and skill retention during the summer break. This is called the ‘Summer Slide’. Parents and teachers can help lessen the effects of summer break on skill retention by encouraging children to read, read, read over the summer… and read with them as part of a continuing routine. My personal suggestion is to play strategy games and do puzzles together as an aid to skill retention and supporting personal time together.
